LearningWhen one discovers something for oneself by one' own efforts instead of passively receiving instruction about it, one turns toward it more enthusiastically, understands it more thoroughly, and appreciates it more deeply. Therefore, one reason for teachers to say less than they might, or even to be silent, about important things is to give learners the opportunity to discover the truth for themselves, perhaps with the aid of a few apt hints or artful suggestions.
Richard McCombs, St. John's College tutor, from his book, The Paradoxical Rationality of Soren Kierkegaard, Indiana, 2013.

God the Eternal Poet
"You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself"
Exodus 19:4 Metaphors express truth. In English classes we discern and express truth in many genres of writing, both nonfiction and imaginative writing such as fiction, drama, and poetry. |
Writing HopeThis year all English classes and some others will incorporate writing strategies as part of a research study being conducted by Professor Nicole Sieben of Adelphi University in New York. Students will participate in beginning and end of year surveys related to motivation and writing.
They will also, if they choose, post their favorite writing on a web site just for this study. The students will remain anonymous for the purposes of the study. |
