Genre Study
This year's class books: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Oliver Twist, Romeo & Juliet, Fahrenheit 451;
Possibles: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Miracle Worker, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Kidnapped.
Research: Students will write a multi-genre paper to report on their topic, or an unfamiliar genre paper in which they research and write in a genre.

Autobiographical reminiscence
- we read & write poetry that reveals aspects of life, building vocabulary and writing skills
- we read selections from the epic journey The Odyssey by Homer and write our own journey episodes
- we read Maya Angelou's real life journey in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
- we extend our reading with true life stories on the classroom shelves (Enrico's Journey, Nat Turner)
- we read short fiction to review its elements & prepare for critical thinking and interpretation
- we read Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, building bridges between his world and ours with discussions and journal entries
- we build vocabulary by logging new words in our notebook
- we extend our reading by addressing social concerns of today

- we participate in group inquiry
- we address essay prompts relating character, idea, or setting in the works we have read
